What is a Mikrokopter?
« on: January 12, 2010, 05:04:14 PM »
The Mikokopter is basically an, on-board computer controlled quadrocopter, with the ability to do amazing things.

With a vibrant Mikrokopter community based in Germany, thanks to Holger Buss and Ingo Busker, this DIY RC genre has proliferated around the world.

With the capabilities of lifting heavy loads and doing partial autonomous flights and a platform wide open to modifications, its a favorite amongst Ariel photographers/video photographers, FPV pilots, Geeks and RC hobbyists alike.

The basic Flight Controller (FC ) consists of a CPU, Gyro scopes, accelerometers and an altimeter. With the help of software these devices work together to send information to a number of Electronic Speed controllers (BL-Cntrl's), which control the power to each of the four, to eight, brush-less motors, spinning the propellers, applying thrust, with one single goal, to maintain level flight. These are all Electric systems and rely on Lipo battery technology for all their power.

With the addition of various software upgrades, and add-on boards, the CPU can utilize a GPS and a 3D Magnetic compass (Navi-Bd, MK-3) to both aid in stability and perform tasks. Wireless data Telemetry is possible using various wireless technologys, including bluetooth and other wireless serial devices such as Xbee's or wi-232. While using these devices you can see different types of data including flight time, battery status, altitude, speed and your position back to a PC running the MKtool software. You are also able to transmit GPS waypoints up to the MK while in flight, allowing you to send it of to a new location.

With its exciting ability to loop and its shear speed there are also many sport pilots benefiting from its capabilities also.

IMHO its a blast to build and a blast to fly.

Those are the basics,  if you want to know, more look around the site and later read the wiki on Mikrokopter.de site for more info.
