Traveling light for an air show
« on: September 03, 2010, 11:13:29 AM »
Getting ready to head out of town for yet another air show. I like to travel light and pack the essentials, you know, laptop, TXs, tools, small parts, battery stand, and of course the Hexa House.

The little lady gets all the other 'easy stuff' to pack.  :D

You flying a King air ?  I don't think that green case thing will fit in my Cessna let alone the Cirrus SR22.  Maybe a Bonanza ..  How you getting to the airshow with that?

The air show takes place less 2 hours from home, thank god.

This is one of the largest air shows I have ever been to. I'ts a 3 day show with pilots from all over the world flying whatever they care to bring.

There are also lots and lots of venders with all kinds of goodies. The event was being hosted at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio which is only a couple of hours from my home.

Yesterday I met a 10 or 11 year old exhibition pilot that was from Russia. He did speak a little english and we talked for a bit since he had many questions about the Hexakopter. His 10'X10' canopy was two away from us or 20'.

At about 10 AM we saw 3 jets on the runway getting ready to all take off at once. I know very little of jets other than the fact that they are blindingly fast. Someone told me at the show that they require a full gallon of fuel to remain flying for 8 minutes.

The 3 jets all just got off the ground and I really didn't get to watch because there was a crowd asking questions about the MK. The next thing I hear is a loud explosion and as I spun around felt the heat from a big fireball and a mushroom cloud of black smoke. Parts were flying through the air as my wife ran past me.  :o

It was all over in a split second...... The dry grass was on fire now and there were several emergency personal arriving with fire extinguishers.

The young boy that I mentioned was hit in the leg and back with flying shrapnel. I don't know if it was the force from the parts or the pain but it knocked him to the ground. As they got him to a recliner I got ice from my cooler and put it in zip-lock bags to ice down this injuries.

As it turns out one of the pilots lost control of his jet on the 1st pass and it was headed for the front line (us) so he intentionally flew it into the ground. It hit inside a orange plastic barrier fence but actually flew through the fence knocking it down. I don't think I saw many pieces come away from the crash/explosion much larger than my fist, it was just awesome.

Talk about the resilience of our youth, within an hour the young exhibition pilot was on the flight line. They were playing his music, a cd that he had brought and he was flying his plane. He told me that he came to the show to fly and by golly that's what he was going to do.

Just goes to show you that 's**t' happens fast!

Headed back to the show today but I hope that I see no more of that kind of excitement. And YES our canopy won't be forward in the line of fire.
