What software do I need to download?
« on: September 05, 2010, 01:35:56 AM »
Hi guys,

I am a bit confused. What software do I need to download to my computer? Are there a few ground station programs?

I downloaded the QMKTools and there is also a QMKGroundStation. I also downloaded MKToolsMaps and there is a Kopter_Tool_V1_70a directory with a program. Do all these programs connect to the Hexa & Okto? Are all these programs open source and under constant development? Pretty confusing...

My computer has on it Windows. Should I change to a Linux computer?

Thanks

I'm fairly new to this as well but so far these are the programs I have downloaded.

The MK Tools (I have the latest version 1.80f I think)
This is the software for changing settings on your MK or for monitoring performance of your MK. You have to have some form of a USB link between your computer and the MK to change settings. I use an XBee link which is wireless and is just plug and play.

Inside MK Tools you have an option to send way points to your MK to make it fly autonomously. In order to use this function you have to upload google earth type maps into your MK Tools so you can click on them and send your MK to those points. To get the maps into MK Tools you need MK Maps.

Those are the only 2 programs I have used so far.

You should have received a MKUSB with your kit. That and MKTool will get you up and flying. Everything else is fluff.

OK got MKTools on Windows. Says: MikroKopter-Tool  V1.70a not running a build from source. Is there an open source?

Downloaded MKToolsMaps V1.18.

Buzzed, if all the files on SVN are fluff, then why are they there?

Thanks,
Yaron

He means they are "extra" features / projects  not needed for regular flight.

Under the SVN projects are several ground station apps. I'm not sure if any of these projects are still on-going. You certainly do not need them to use your kopter. The only one that really interests me is Spektrum Diversity, or using more than one Spektrum satellite receiver. I've download some of the project source code but never tried to compile it. There is also info available on the communication protocols, etc. if you want to make your own groundstation app.

Thanks David. I just tried building/compiling the few projects with Qt (first time for me), but they won't build without errors of missing files. I wonder why there is no readme or an instruction file. pretty useless, though the idea of tweaking a groundstation program and seeing how to communicate with the Okto, maybe adding to the screen information, setting the feet, knots, MpH, I don't know  8) . Why do you need more than one Spektrum receiver? to use more than one remote would require an extra pair of hands  :P

Did anybody here succeed in compiling any of the projects and created something nifty and is willing to share? Maybe there should be a branch in the forum for tweakers  :-X
