Am I asking too much
« on: May 03, 2012, 02:09:17 AM »

I have an Octo XL but recently built a Hexa XL complete with Axi Motors and xoar 13 6.5 props. I am flying the AV200 camera mount and the Canon 500D (Rebel in the US I think) without camera the unit flies silky smooth although the hover is not stable as the throttle is very sensitive a little up and the hexa rises fast a tiny bit down and the thing drops like a brick. Also with the 500D onboard the machine is twitchy  and not settled in the sky for a second going this way and that. I guess it could be settings but am I asking too much from a Hexa XL with this load? what do you think?

I'm definitely not speaking from experience, since I have yet to undertake my first build, but I think if it's twitchy with a load then it's not having trouble with it. I would imagine that if the load was too heavy the copter would be anything but twitchy. Also as far as I know the Hexa XL can handle a 5D MkII no problem, and that's a lot heavier than your 500D.

So—it may indeed be settings… 'cause it sounds like you have a pretty damn sweet setup.

That's my inexperienced ¢2 ;)

Yes I agree I think you may have the settings at Setting 1 - try Setting 3 (Mode 2) Left stick up left - right stick up. This is the 'normal' setting and is best suited for aerial photography

Thank you very much for replying to my post.
I was thinking the load may have been too much at first so was looking for suggestions from the experts, but if given full stick (and yes I fly mode 2, left stick throttle) the machine has power to rocket away like a spitfire from hover, (it still is hovering slightly over half stick) so I was kinda also thinking at the same time with so much reserve that may be it was not the load.

Without the new AV200 but with the same 500D camera and slr 2 camera mount the machine was super stable after fitting the Xoar props. Before this I was and have been using the carbon 12 3.8 props and the slo fly APC 12's on the lighter load but found these were great for the Gopro camera but with the 500D it was a little twitchy then, so as I mentioned I then changed to the now Xoar wooden 13 6.5 and the flight became instantly super smooth. However now fitting back the AV 200 and the 500D it is not that stable again. However after much reading here on this forum I tend to know think the weight although is significant and does still cause some issues is still not too much. I will go back to the dark art of PID and gain adjustments hahaha to see if this improves it. Or and by the way I forgot to add that another form of extra weight in this set up is the addition of a second battery. The Original set up for Octo and Hexa was, MK SLR2 camera mount and 1x 8000mhr battery, the current set up is AV200 360pan and 500D with double 5800mah batteries.
If anyone is interested I will post settings when I am through.

Thanks again,

Stephen

set your Altitude hold min gas up a bit higher with the heavier load it should be just a bit below hover.
 Are you using vario?
you should, it also makes heavy loads easier to deal with.

you should always set up your system with no load first then work on adding weight
hope this helps.

Hi Ziggy and all, thanks for the replies, The current situation is like this,

Hexa XL, Axi 2814 motors, 13 x7 XOAR props, AV200 360pan mount, twin Zippy 5800 mah 4s batteries, and a Canon G12. All up flying weight almost 5kg, Now then I am using the MX 20 radio with spring on the throttle and yes Ziggy I am using the vario for the first time and it is good I like it. I am having problem with the Alt hold and posted the question in the newbie page just in case someone thought I was asking a to simple question here. I have read the threads in this great forum but I have one unanswered question, should I set my mid stick position to my actual hover throttle value which is about 140-150 throttle instead of the recommended 127? Then would this stop the drop when releasing the stick to mid position in AH?

By the way I also got a reply from Mikrokopter Germany who say all up flying weight of a Hexa XL should not exceed 3.8kg so this means the AV200 is actually too big for hexa derrrrrrrr... Does anyone else have a Hexa this heavy???
