Flexamount gimbal
« on: April 19, 2012, 02:19:36 PM »

I just finished my 2 axis gimbal for my Flexacopter.
Is a smaller version of the CS gimbal works great on the bench, will see what it does in flight.

I used Savox servos for tilt and roll and upon converting them to 360d I noticed that they are identical to the Align DS-620 servos. Are they made by the same people?
For the roll servo I used a Hitec for now. I have to cut a bracket for the Savox
Cheers

Zorba -

That looks great, and is exactly what I was thinking of building once I get my cnc running. (That might be a while, since it is my first one ever.)

Where did you get those clamps? Are they the $19 CS clamps!? :o

Thanks for the comments guys.
Those are 20mm carbon tubes and the clamps are from Mikado # 04232.
Now Mikado changed their packaging system.
The first time I bought them there were 4 halves (2) clamps per package, the second time there were 2 halves (1) clamp per package. So I looked around and I got them from somewhere else that had 4 halves per package.

Mikado said that since there's only one clamp fpr the tail boom, they don't see th reason for 2 per pkg.

ready heli has them also.
I got them here: KS model in HK

Zorba -

Thanks for the info on the clamps! And also about the servo! Which Savox servo do you recommend? My AV200 uses the SH-1290mg. Is that the one that is identical to the Align DS-620?

Anyway, I am definitely now going to try my hand at building one like yours/like CS!!

Would you be willing to share your parts list, either here in the forum or in PM? That is, things like which bearings you used, and which gears you used, and which external potentiometers you used?

Also, a couple of other questions:
  • What is the white stuff inside the hole that the tilt pot is connected to?
  • Why did you choose belt drive on the roll axis, but direct gear drive on the tilt axis?
  • What sort of reduction are you using on both axes? 25:1 like the CS uses?
  • What kind of performance are you getting from your gimbal? Have you flown it yet? Any videos?

Ha ha! Sorry! I just find this very exciting! I've never built my own gimbal before, but I have been wanting to do so and your design seems both elegant, affordable and constructable!!

Thanks!

Wow thanks Craig so many questions LOL
I use the SC-1258TG  Savox which is the same a sthe DS-620 Align.

The belt drive is a repair kit for the CS.
http://www.Commercial links not allowed/CineStar-Gimbal-Repair-Kit_p_543.html
I chose gear drive for the tilt cause I can swing 90d either way a total of 180d.
I can have my copter tilted at 45d and the gimbal will follow. The roll doesn't need to swing alot only 45d either way.
here we go:
Potentiometer: http://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/6639S-1-502/6639S-1-502-ND/274006
Tilt servo gear: http://www.servocity.com/html/32_pitch_nylon_gears___200__fa.html
Tilt servo main gear is from the Mini Titan electric heli(can't find the link for it.You can also use the gear from the Align 450 heli.
The white stuff inside the tube is a piece of Delrin I cut with a hole saw to keep the tube from collapsing incase I apply too much pressure also it serves as a bearing for the potentiometer and main shaft.

Flanged bearings from here:
http://www.usabearingsandbelts.com/m7/100670--fr4-zz-bulk-flanged-shielded-bearings-1-4x5-8x-196.html
The performance on the bench is awesome, very smooth, Today I was setting up the calibration on the MK tools so the cam stays level, it worked.
No videos yet the bird is not flyable as I am waiting for inserts for the props and a cable for the GPS.

I hope this helps.
here's a pic of the hole saw. I had to grind down the outer and inner diameter so I can get the 19mm fit.

Cheers
Bill
PS No cnc here just standard shop tools did the job.

You are right. When I bought my first gimbal from MK de. I said to my self no way that is too flimsy.
So I decided to do my own.
It is fun. here's couple more I did.

Very, very cool!  Thanks for the links!

I am going to try my hand at this, but I would sure like to figure out how to complete the build without that $150 CStar kit!! I might try to figure out which belts/pulleys and which tilt/roll shafts they are and source them from ServoCity!!

I'm sure this will take me a while, but I will post my results.

Thanks for the help! Please be sure to post video from this gimbal once you get it airborne!!

Thanks again --

Hre's another gimbal is the AV200 which I got from the shop.
For controller I use an old FC 2.0
The gimbal is 3 axis. I have the tilt on the elevator and the pan on the aileron.
tilt is servo 1, roll is servo 2 and pan is servo 3.
I still have to do some tweaking to get the gains right.
This gimbal is mounted on the DJI S-800 frame
Here's a small video.

Cheers

Hey Bill, that's looking good now.. When you get it dialed in, hope we can see some samples.
